This morning, WBAI 99.5 FM's Wake Up Call hosted an hour forum to discuss men and violence. This spoke to me in light of my experience this weekend. The discussion featured author and activist, Kevin Powell, Director of CONNECT Training Institute & Community Empowerment Program, Quentin Walcott and Dashaun Morris, debut author of War of the Bloods in My Veins. Wake Up Call's amazing hostess, Esther Armah, facilitated the discussion.
The perspective about power struggles, not just among men and women, but internally, among men, within the community and the larger world around us, is eye-opening and dead on. Though I don't feel sympathy for the dude in the club this weekend, I do understand people's motivations and reactions more...including myself and my role in perpetuating drama. I'm trying to find more peaceful ways to fight and resolve these issues starting with the woman in the mirror.
Oh yeah and that's me doing the news...shameless self-promotion.
