I'm on the fence about online activism, i.e. signing petitions that go...somewhere to someone in cyberspace but what about in the physical realm? Nonetheless, I sign many a petition and pass them along, retweet, post on Facebook, encourage others to sign. Sigh, activism 2.0.
However, there are lots of legitimate orgs using online petitions to garner support and, at least, raise awareness of their causes, so it's worth the 60 seconds to e-sign. And please change the letter or leave a comment, it makes me feel slightly more legit.
Tonight on Twitter, @honeebrown (via @lisaling) shared this link to free American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee who have just been sentenced to 12 years of "reform through hard labor" in a North Korean jail for "hostile acts," i.e. reporting on trafficking of women on the North Korea/China border. They have been in custody since March 17th subject to solitary confinement and (I'm sure) other horrors.
People are legitimately organizing to free these brave female journalists, harnassing the power of community online. Please take a moment to sign the petition, join the Facebook group, visit their blog, and retweet to your heart's content. Please. For a real women's lives...offline.
