Can you get an STD from a Bikini Wax?

Waxing your genital area might seem like a nice, easy way to maintain good hygiene but it can be more risky than you think.

Earlier this year New Jersey lawmakers contemplated banning Brazilian bikini waxes after two women were hospitalized with infections alleged to be a result of getting a bikini wax!

The ban, which would still permit regular bikini waxes but outlaw Brazilian waxes, was eventually voted down. But the case managed to draw enough attention to the unsettling fact that STDs can be contracted during a bikini wax that this was reported in this month's issue of Shape Magazine.

Waxing the genitals can be risky because the hot wax can irritate or tear the fragile skin in the bikini area, leading to infections, ingrown hairs and rashes, according to dermatologists. Viruses and bacteria can be spread from one client to another via contaminated scissors, tweezers, or surfaces. How do you know if the salon/spa you attend propoerly disinfects their tools before/after each client? Does the person performing your waxing wear gloves?

There were many reports that the women contracted herpes from getting a bikini wax, but that's somewhat hard to believe because of the scenario that would have had to take place for that to happen. This could very well be a scare tactic, just another thing in the news to create hysteria . . . but still doctors still warn that bikini waxing can be dangerous, particularly for people with compromised immune systems which is more than you think. I don't get waxes but I know people who do. And I wonder why do women go through all of this trouble shaving, plucking, tweezing, waxing? Why isn't trimming enough? lol
