Fibroids seem to disproportionately affect African-American women, and anecdotally I know of many women who have been told my doctors that they have them, and/or have had to have them surgically removed. It's a curious phenomenon because it affects African-American women of all ages and it's not easy to pinpoint their cause, though I suspect there is some historical trauma aspect that causes these disparities. Some women end up with fibroids the size of grapefruits, or they grow so big that it's as if they are carrying around a fetus. What role does our nutrition play? (I'm sure huge) What about stress and lifestyle? Exercise?
Tiffany Denise, a Harlem based Naturopathic and Holistic Nutritionist, is hosting her next seminar to discuss this topic. "Fibroids Revealed: The Real Deal, How To Heal" will be held on Wednesday, August 12 from 6-7 p.m at Black Gold, 70 W. 125th St. She holds regular women's health seminars so visit her Facebook and Youtube to learn more.
We must learn how to take care of ourselves and account for these disparities. There is a powerful connection between our minds and bodies, and we have the power to heal our bodies with our thoughts, emotions and feelings.
