Black Girls Rock!

That they do. And you can help black girls rock even harder by supporting the 4th Annual "Black Girls Rock" Awards fundraiser this Saturday, October 17 at the TimesCenter in NYC. The event is co-hosted by Regina King and Tracie Ellis-Ross. Award honorees include: Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Sonia Sanchez, Naomi Campbell, Raven Symone, Janelle Monae, DJ Spinderella, Iyanla Vanzant, Dr. Mehret Monfredo and Anthony Hamilton.

The tickets may be steep but it is directly inspiring young people around New York City. Black Girls Rock is a Brooklyn-based non-profit, founded by DJ Beverly Bond, provides mentorship along with arts and media education to "at-risk" teenage women of color, focusing on cultivating self-esteem and positive self-imagery, during a critical time in their lives. Whatever your situation (it is a recession), you can still donate via their website.

Roe V. Wade, 36 and counting...

Today marks the 36th Anniversary of the monumental Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade in favor of legalizing abortion. Though for many young people today, this decision is just a fact of life, that we have legal access to abortion and other contraceptive services, and don't have to succumb to back alley abortions with hangers and other destructive and debilitating pregnancy termination techniques. However, it's important to note that different states have different levels of access and laws that both help and hurt women from accessing abortion counseling, services, procedures, etc. Thank Goddess for New York.

Speaking of the Big Apple, our state was one of the first to pass abortion legislation and in 1970, we had the most liberal abortion law in the country (yes, 2 years before Roe v. Wade). Constance Cooke, a New York assemblywoman, who was one of the main sponsors of this legislation, passed away yesterday. It's also interesting to note that during that time, 60% of women obtaining abortion in New York were from out-of-state. Today, many women from all over the country are still coming to New York for abortions because their state has certain restrictions, permissions and other barriers to access. The New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF) is a non-profit organization that provides funding for low-income women from NY and beyond to obtain legal abortions that they desire. The problem of control of a woman's body remains despite what in the books. It's a matter of mentality, socio-economic status, ethics vs. religion, patriarchy vs. matriarchy, you know...

So in this spirit of Goddess Cooke, Roe v. Wade, and Obama, I've included some links about abortion: abortion and women of color, the "pro-life" (anti-choice) folks who were marching today on the Mall, and of course a way to donate to NYAAF so we can ensure that women EVERYWHERE can make decisions for their own bodies.

Rock The Vote and Get Your Rocks Off

As I mentioned before I'm in Guatemala City for this landmark historic election. I'm a little sad but thank Goddess for the internet for keeping me posted with all the mania and excitement happening stateside. I've seen lots of ads for "free Starbucks coffee on Election Day!," free donuts and all sorts of other goodies. But the BEST by far is an offer from Toys in Babeland for a free "magic bullet" or a "maverick" for all voters.

If you're wondering what the hell that is...it's a vibrator or a "sleeve" and they are free if you show up to any Toys in Babeland location in New York and Seattle with a voter ID card, or word of honor. This offer is good from today through November 11th, so now that the coffee is all dried up and the donuts are stale, you can get your freak on while supplies last. And you'll have something to do while waiting for the election results to come in (no pun intended...kind of).

Who says voting can't be fun? ;-)

Debate me, baby!

Who says politics can't be sexy?

Naked politics gets US debate watchers hot and bothered

NEW YORK (AFP) — The debate was intense, titillating, raw, even perverse -- at least for those watching Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama on screens in New York's Museum of Sex.

Debate parties are a dime-a-dozen in New York, but this must have been the only such event Wednesday where viewers' attention wandered so easily.

The session of naked politics took place in a hall where dozens of TV screens only minutes earlier had been filled with quite a different kind of nudity.

To one side was an exhibition devoted to the sex lives of animals, including X-rated action from panda bears and the sexual cannibalism of the whiptail lizard.

To the other side ranged a display of the more peculiar inventions devoted to human sex habits, ranging from whips to what could have been a dentist's chair, except for the life-like penis.

Meanwhile, on the multiple TV screens, McCain the Republican and Democrat Obama argued about energy resources and tax policy.

The 200 or so New Yorkers present seemed to think the mix just right.

"What better than to combine sex and politics, the two things you're not meant to talk about in public?" giggled Simon Betz, 37, as she scrutinized the non-dentist's chair.

"Everything is so messed up in our country that it's good we go and have fun and think about sex. Hey, it's better than thinking about the collapsing economy and how poor we're all going to be."

Not surprisingly, this was not Republican territory.

Boos at McCain and cheers for Obama punctuated the debate -- almost as loud as the recordings of moans and cries that had filled the same room just before.

"Obama put sex back into politics," said a dreamy Jennifer Wright, 22, wearing a long red dress and black nail polish.

Artist Molly Crabapple, with a huge orange butterfly hairpin and a low-cut dress, used the occasion to unveil her painting "Politics."

The water color, which was hung opposite a sex robot, depicts an orgy of money and sex in which a rampant red elephant, the Republican mascot, is intimately involved with a blue donkey, the Democratic Party symbol.

Crabapple said the nightmarish scene reflects that "US politics is all a huge game of distractions played by people who are essentially all like each other."

That's the kind of cynicism that has become widespread in the United States and which both McCain and Obama claim they can address.

But Crabapple, a fervent Obama supporter, had only one regret.

The painting was completed two months ago, before she believed her hero, now leading opinion polls, could win.

"If I was painting it today, I'd have the donkey on top," she said.

Despite the bizarre atmosphere, viewers clearly had a deep interest in the November 4 election, which they think Obama has still not sewn up, despite his current advantage.

"Right now, Obama's ahead. But what are people going actually to do once they're in the polling booth?" said Eileen Sharaga, 58, resolutely attempting to ignore an explicit instructional video on masturbation.

"I'm anxious, extremely anxious," she said.
