The Black Girl Project

Super Hussy Media
presents

The Black Girl Project Screening and Fundraiser

Friday August 27, 2010

This Friday, August 27 at 7 pm the Black Girl Project film will debut in The Spike Lee Screening Room at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. For ticket information visit http://bgpbk.eventbrite.com/. To learn more about the film and fundraiser visit www.blackgirlproject.org.

The Black Girl Project as stated on the website:

The Black Girl Project is a documentary film which asks pretty much one question: who are you? Of course that question morphed into other, follow-up questions, but that singular question lies at the heart of the film.

In a culture where Black women and girls are either venerated for their saintly accomplishments which strips them of any other character attribute except that of martyr/mammy, or demonized and used as the fall gal to explain away all that is wrong with the Black community and society-at-large, it is important to hear and see Black girls speak their truths.

Traditional media continues to have a problem with realistic, multi-faceted portrayals of Black women and girls, and for that matter, all females of color. It is our hope that the film adds to the discussions about Black women and girls across the country and that it will contribute to a paradigm shift in how they are seen by others and how they see themselves.

Please support this film and organization.

Burlesque Bras for a Cause

I love Facebook because cool stuff sometimes falls right into my lap. Like this event, tomorrow night (Monday, April 19th) from 9pm-1am at Public Assembly, "Burlesque Bras for A Cause," is going down...it's a burlesque show and artistic bra auction in support of Angela, a breast cancer survivor and mother of 3 in Jamaica who has fallen behind on her chemo payments. Her niece, burlesque dancer "The Incredible, Edible Akynos" coordinated this fundraiser to help her aunt in her treatments. Details are below...this is a wonderful idea to provide some hope in a heartbreaking situation. My best wishes to Goddess Angela.

The art bra auction sponsors and designers include:

- BUST Magazine
- Dirty Dolls Lingerie
- Angie Pontani- Burlesque Bombshell
- World Famous *BOB* - The Dream Come True Girl!
- Garo Sparo- Costume Designer

The burlesque show will feature:
- Maddy Mann
- Margoh and Manee
- Stormy and Max
- Della Dare
- The Incredible, Edible, Akynos
- Brown Girls Burlesque
- Charlie Demos

Proceeds will benefit:
Angeleta Hewitt, known to friends as “Angela” is a 40 year old mother of three. She lives in Jamaica and is battling breast cancer. She is also the aunt to New York based burlesque performer: The Incredible, Edible Akynos. In July of 2009, Angela found a lump in her breast, which turned out to be cancerous. She had this lump removed the following November, but unfortunately that has not been the end of her battle with cancer.

Angela desperately needs to continue her chemotherapy. Her cancer is aggressive and can easily spread throughout her body. However, Angela continuously misses her chemotherapy sessions because of her financial circumstances. Angela is a hairdresser by trade, and makes money whenever she can get a client, but she is finding it harder to work due to her condition. Unfortunately, Angela missed her last chemotherapy session because she was recently robbed. This incident really set her back—that money was also meant to pay her doctor bills. Presently, she is unable to afford any sort of treatment for her cancer.

The Incredible, Edible Akynos has organized the Burlesque Bras for a Cause event, to save her aunt’s life. The goal of this event is to raise enough money, so Angela can get the vital medications and treatments that she needs.
